Smart Wear, Statement Hair

I recently went to a party hosted by three old friends of mine with a Smart Wear, Statement Hair dress code.

Real Flower Garland

The dress code attracted various wigs, hair bands, animal ears and unusual dip-dyes. While the birthday girls opted for elegance with bouffant hairstyles and gorgeous curls I took the opportunity to get creative. With hair accessories so on trend, I trawled the internet in search for something perfect. Stumbling upon tons of flower garlands, I decided to opt for something pretty and floral and set about making my own from real flowers.

Birthday girl, Holly, looking lovely with her bouffant hair, myself and Jenny sporting the futuristic mouse ears!
I think I got a bit carried away and was definitely one of the few to spend make such an effort on my statement hair but I did feel very  pretty (if not a bit like a bridesmaid).

How I made it...
I selected the flowers from a slightly wilting bouquet that was already in my kitchen with only a few days of life left in them. With my hair loosely curled, I then positioned them across the top of my head, leaving a section of hair in front. I took tiny clear hair elastics and sectioned small portions of hair, tying the stems of one flower into each of the bands as I went along. I then adjusted the flowers to sit nicely and used kirby grips to secure into place. I also used a bit of greenery from the bunch to fill in any gaps. One I was happy I used hairspray in attempt to stop the flowers drooping during the evening, being careful to hold the can far from the flowers so as not to damage them. I then used strands of hair to cover the stems at the back and asked a friend to cut away any excess. It was trial and error really and luckily paid off but it was certainly more time consuming than buying one online (although definitely prettier!). I teamed it with a classic French Connection black dress and black wedges which really made the flowers stand out.

It's a shame its not really an acceptable everyday hair style as I loved making and wearing it! It could be very festival-chic although perhaps a ready made one without real flowers might be more appropriate. If you don't fancy making your own, there are plenty online such as this one.
